01

What Is NIL and Why It Matters

Since July 1, 2021, the NCAA and most governing bodies permit college athletes to earn compensation based on their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). For gymnasts and Olympic sport athletes specifically, this opens doors that previous generations never had access to.

๐Ÿ…

Name

Your identity โ€” your personal brand, signature, reputation, and the story you've built as an athlete.

๐Ÿ“ธ

Image

Photos, videos, and any visual representation of you in uniform or associated with your sport and persona.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

Likeness

Your voice, style, mannerisms, and any recognizable characteristics that distinguish you as an individual.

Why Olympic Sport Athletes Have Unique Leverage

Gymnasts, swimmers, track athletes, and other Olympic sport competitors often carry Olympic aspirations, which dramatically increases their marketability. Brands seeking authentic, aspirational, values-driven athletes are actively looking for you โ€” not just football and basketball stars.

02

Staying Compliant โ€” Non-Negotiables

Every NIL activity must pass through your school's compliance process. No exceptions. Skipping this step can cost you your eligibility.

Register with Your School's Compliance Office

Before you sign anything, identify your school's Athletic Compliance Officer and your sport's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). Understand your school's disclosure timeline โ€” typically 7โ€“14 days prior to engagement.

Use Your School's NIL Disclosure Platform

Most schools use platforms like Compass (by Teamworks), INFLCR, or ARMS. Every deal โ€” no matter how small โ€” must be logged here. A 0 Instagram post still needs to be disclosed.

Understand Your State's NIL Law

NIL rules vary by state. Some states have agent disclosure laws, restrictions on sponsor categories, or specific tax filing requirements. Your compliance office will know your state's rules โ€” ask them directly.

Avoid Prohibited Sponsor Categories

Certain industries are broadly prohibited regardless of state. Review the table below and never engage a brand in these categories without explicit compliance approval.

No Pay-for-Play or Recruiting Inducements

NIL deals cannot be structured as incentives for you to attend, remain at, or perform for your school. Deals tied to athletic performance outcomes are impermissible under NCAA rules.

Sponsor CategoryStatusNotes
Athletic wear / apparelGenerally OKCannot conflict with school's official apparel deal
Health & nutrition supplementsReview RequiredProduct must be NSF Certified for Sportยฎ
Sports equipment brandsGenerally OKVerify no conflict with school contracts

Alcohol brandsProhibitedBroadly impermissible for NCAA athletes
Tobacco / cannabis / vapingProhibitedProhibited under virtually all governing bodies
Sports betting / gamblingProhibitedNCAA explicitly prohibits all gambling-related NIL
Adult content platformsProhibitedImmediate eligibility risk
Prescription drugs / CBDReview RequiredComplex; requires compliance & legal review
Critical Warning

If a brand pressures you to skip compliance disclosure or rush to sign "before your school finds out," that is a major red flag. Walk away and contact Salto immediately. Your eligibility is worth more than any single deal.

03

Evaluating and Vetting Deals

Not every deal is worth taking. Here's how Salto evaluates every opportunity before it gets near your signature.

A deal that costs you your reputation or eligibility is never worth the check. We vet everything โ€” so you never have to choose between your career and your values.

๐Ÿ”

Brand Audit

We research the company's reputation, financial stability, and any controversies before we engage. Unknown brands get extra scrutiny.

๐Ÿ“„

Contract Review

Every contract is reviewed for exclusivity clauses, image ownership rights, morality clauses, and payment terms before you see it.

โš–๏ธ

Compliance Check

We submit the deal summary to your compliance office before negotiations go far to avoid wasted time on ineligible deals.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Fair Value Assessment

We benchmark your deal rate against comparable athletes, follower counts, and engagement metrics so you never undersell yourself.

Red Flags in Contracts

  • Perpetual or unlimited image rights with no expiration date
  • Exclusivity in broad categories for extended terms
  • Payment contingent on athletic performance or team wins
  • Vague or undefined deliverables with no revision limits
  • No kill-fee if the brand cancels the agreement early
  • Clauses requiring you to endorse positions on controversial topics
  • Requests to use school logos, team uniforms, or conference branding
School Marks & Uniforms

You cannot use your school's official name, logo, team marks, or uniform in any NIL promotion without explicit written permission from your school's athletics department. This is one of the most common compliance violations โ€” even if you're just wearing your gear in a photo.

04

Building Your Personal Brand

Your NIL value is directly tied to your personal brand. Athletes who are intentional about their story command higher rates and attract better partners. Start building now โ€” regardless of where you are in your career.

Define Your Story

What makes you uniquely you? Your training journey, cultural background, values, cause areas, or your path to Olympic ambitions. Brands want athletes with authentic narratives, not just follower counts.

Establish a Consistent Social Presence

Pick 1โ€“2 platforms and post consistently. Instagram and TikTok are highest-ROI for most gymnasts. Quality behind-the-scenes content, training footage, and personality-driven posts build engaged audiences brands want to reach.

Engagement Beats Follower Count

A 10,000-follower account with 8% engagement is more valuable to most brands than a 100,000-follower account with 0.5% engagement. Focus on genuine connection with your community.

Create a Media Kit

Salto will help you build a one-page document with your bio, sport stats, social metrics, audience demographics, and rate sheet. This is what you send to brands instead of answering the same questions repeatedly.

Gymnastics & Olympic Sport Advantage

Gymnasts tend to attract lifestyle, activewear, wellness, and youth-oriented brands at above-average rates. Your sport's visual appeal on social media โ€” especially short-form video โ€” is a genuine competitive advantage in the NIL marketplace. Use it.

05

Money Management & Taxes

NIL income is taxable income. Many first-time earners are surprised by their tax bill. Plan ahead and you'll keep significantly more of what you earn.

๐Ÿฆ

Open a Separate Account

Keep NIL income completely separate from your personal spending account. This makes tax prep dramatically simpler and provides a clear financial paper trail.

๐Ÿ“‘

Track Every Dollar

Log every payment and every product gifted (gifting is taxable at fair market value), plus every business expense associated with your NIL activities.

๐Ÿ“Š

Set Aside 25โ€“30%

Reserve 25โ€“30% of every NIL payment for federal and state taxes. Underpaying taxes can result in penalties if you earn above a threshold.

๐Ÿงพ

Deductible Expenses

Equipment, software, photography, travel for appearances, and agent fees may be deductible. Work with a CPA who specializes in athlete income.

SituationTax FormWhat You Need to Do

Do Not Ignore Small Payments

All NIL income must be reported regardless of whether you receive a 1099. "I didn't get a form" is not a valid excuse during an audit.

06

Freshman Guide โ€” Starting Right

As a freshman, your priority is eligibility protection and building the foundation for future earnings. Don't rush into deals โ€” build smart.

Your First 90-Day Checklist

  • Meet your school's compliance officer and get their direct contact information
  • Register on your school's NIL disclosure platform before any activity
  • Review your school's NIL policy document (usually on the athletics website)
  • Read your scholarship agreement for any NIL-related provisions
  • Open a dedicated checking account for NIL income
  • Audit and professionalize your social media accounts
  • Set up your Salto athlete profile (media kit, rate baseline)
  • Identify 3โ€“5 brand categories that align with your personal values
Freshman Reality Check

It's completely normal to have limited NIL deals as a freshman. Building your brand and your athletic profile simultaneously is the goal. Small, authentic local deals often outperform chasing big national brands that aren't a fit yet. Patience in year one pays dividends by year three.

07

Upperclassman Strategy โ€” Maximizing Your Window

Junior and senior year is when your NIL value peaks โ€” and when poor decisions carry the highest cost. Here's how to make the most of it while protecting what you've built.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Raise Your Rates

Your audience, achievements, and national profile are at their peak. Salto reviews your rate sheet every semester so you never leave money on the table.

๐Ÿค

Multi-Deal Strategy

Pursue a portfolio of 3โ€“6 aligned brand partners rather than one large exclusive deal. Diversification protects your income and your brand identity.

๐Ÿ”ฎ

Post-Eligibility Planning

Consider what deals carry into your professional or Olympic career. Some brand relationships built in college become valuable long-term partnerships after graduation.

๐ŸŽ“

Protect Your Degree

No NIL deal is worth your academic standing. Salto will never recommend engagements that conflict with finals, exams, or required team activities.

Your college career is the launchpad. Every deal you take should either pay you fairly today or open a door you want to walk through tomorrow.

Senior Year Transition Checklist

  • Audit all active contracts for post-eligibility rights and term expiration
  • Begin building relationships with post-collegiate representation (pro agents)
  • Document your full NIL earnings history for professional brand negotiation use
  • Plan for changes in tax filing status after leaving school
  • Evaluate NIL collective memberships and whether they transfer any benefits
